13,850 Crore Value Share Bought By Mutual Funds; SBI Was The Largest Holder

HDFC Bank(NSE: HDFCBANK) Share: Mutual funds took advantage of the fall in HDFC Bank’s stock in January and bought shares worth Rs 13850 crore amid poor earnings.

Funds sold approximately 1.53 crore HDFC Bank shares during the quarter ending December 2023 and purchased around 8.83 crore shares in January.

In January 2024, mutual fund investors held approximately 136.26 crore shares of HDFC Bank. In December 2023, this figure was 127.44 crore shares. The value of these shares has declined between Rs 2,18 lakh crore and Rs 1,99 lakh crore.

40 mutual funds that have money in HDFC Bank, 27 increased their stake in January, while 13 decided to reduce some part of their stake. ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund made the highest purchase of HDFC Bank shares worth Rs 3933 crore. 

After this, HDFC Mutual Fund bought shares worth Rs 2981 crore and Kotak Mutual Fund bought shares worth Rs 2625 crore.

HDFC Bank: Who Is The Largest Stakeholder? 

SBI Mutual Fund, with 36.18 million shares valued at Rs 52.921 crore, was the largest shareholder in HDFC Bank in January. HDFC Mutual Fund was followed by ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund with 16,2 crore, 13,69 crore, and 14,99 crore shares.

These shares were valued at Rs 23686 crores and Rs 19990 crore respectively. UTI Mutual Fund is one of the major players in the market. Other important stakeholders include Nippon India Mutual Fund. Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund and Mirae Asset Mutual Fund are also significant.

HDFC Bank shares saw a decline of more than 14.4 percent in January after the December 2023 quarter results were out. ​The net interest margin of the bank was lower than anticipated at 3.4 percent for the third quarter.

There has been a 33.5% jump in the net profit of HDFC Bank in the December quarter and it became Rs 16,372 crore. ​

The net interest margin of the bank was 3.4 percent in the third quarter, lower than expected. The bank’s gross NPA increased to 1.26 percent, which was 1.23 percent a year ago.

Mutual Funds Also Increased Stakes In These Companies

Mutual funds, in addition to HDFC Bank, have increased their stakes in Reliance Industries (formerly Reliance Industries India), Kotak Mahindra Bank (formerly Kotak Mahindra Bank), Maruti Suzuki India, and State Bank of India.

Funds have been invested in these ranging from Rs 1460 crore to Rs 3139 crore. 

On the other hand, mutual funds withdrew Rs 3377 crore from ICICI Bank. Similarly, Bharti Airtel and Tata Motors sold a lot of shares.
